Let By is a community reclamation empowerment project. Re-appropriating the format of the estate agent sign. Let By creates a temporary public art gallery informed by and showcasing Stoke’s community.
This project is designed to reference the domination of property markets on the aesthetics and characters of our towns and cities, and to open a door to Stoke’s homes ‘Let By’ and celebrate the people who inhabit them.
I spent two months working with local photographer Tim Diggles meeting Stoke residents, hearing their stories and taking their portraits. I invited Caitlin Sheppard to carry out interviews with me and to record these narratives. I then created 40 images using the portraits and quotes from the interviews to make our own Let By signs and mounted them on private and public houses throughout the city.
